The Prunelli Gorge

This place is, really, magnificent. There, front to an imposing landscape, you’ll find the higher average of big fish in the whole Ajaccio’s back country .

Sure, but… For, there’s a “but”. The water flow in the Prunelli depends on the Edf good-will , that has built a big dam across the river and many micro power stations. Moreover, the gorge is very narrow and, does not includes a lot of exits.

Don’t venture yourself alone on this course!

To reach this spot from Ajaccio, go towards Porticcio . After the airport, take the road to Bastelicaccia., then, after the service station and the baker’s shop , go on towards Ocana-tolla.. You will cross along "les coteaux du Prunelli"., cultivated lands. When you see the stone bridge (« ponte di a setti poli »), you can park your cat and admire!

Here is the river upstream.
And down stream.

The interesting section starts up the micro power station.. The Prunelli winds through the valley, but we are not yet into the gorge.
Here you’ve to take care if you want not to be seen.
A small cdc and a cautious approach will allow you to surprise trout feeding up.

Can you imagine about 30 rising fish in a same while. Your heart, excited with adrenaline, is beating stronger and stonger, faster and faster. Yau take time enough to reach the spot.. And, there, bang, you crash down into the water, for, stones are covered with an extremely slippery kind of silt probably coming from the dam or cultures.

Upstream, along the cultivated fields, you’ll find some pools as this one. You’ll go fishing with a nymph. A “champion du monde” will be very suitable. If there are no rising fish, and if you want tu use a dry fly, try a emergent sedge caddis.

This picture has been caught into the gorge. You can reach the spot right from the road. To get there, go on towards Ocana.
When you see a very dangerous bent, there is a place to park your car.

Access to the water through asphodels an wild asparagus can be tricky on 250m, being a case of searching out a suitable footpath leading down to the river. Then you’ll find on your left the only entry (and exit) to the Prunelli gorge. The slope is a bit perilous, but it’s worthy. Trout averaging 40-45 cms are waiting for you and, moreover, they are not mistrustful. Certainly because not many anglers use tu venture themselves down there.

All spots spots are very similar to this one. The river is over 2m deep and trout are grateful for the risks you dared to take.
